Born in Pleasant Home, Owen County, Kentucky, son of George W. Smoot and Ann Rowlett. Conversion to Mormonism, 1835; proselyting with Wilford Woodruff through Kentucky and Tennessee; settlement in Kirtland, Ohio; removal to Far West, Missouri and participation in defending the Saints against the mob activity there; marriage to Martha Thompson McMeans, 1838; mission to the Southern States; mission to England; elected as the second mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah; removal to Provo, Utah and election to the office of mayor; started the Provo Woolen Mill and the First National Bank and service as president of both; service as president of the Brigham Young Academy.

Abraham O. Smoot was born 17 February 1815 in Owenton, Franklin County (later Owen County), Kentucky. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1835, when twenty years old, and led a group of Saints from the south to Far West, Missouri in 1837. He later served as captain of the second company to enter the Salt Lake Valley, arriving in September of 1847.
